
3 WAY TRAIL MIX LIKE YOU NEVER HAD BEFORE
A trail mix is full of healthy fats from nuts and seeds, sweetness from dried fruit and heartiness from the grains. It is an easy and satisfying snack that can even double up as an on the go breakfast.

There are so many variations to a trail mix, that one might become overwhelmed when wanting to build their own trail mix. An easy formula to remember when wanting to create your own trail mix is:
1 Part healthy fats and protein (nuts or/and seeds)
Peanuts
Cashew nuts
Almonds
Pumpkin seeds
Sunflower seeds
1 Part healthy sweetness (dried fruits or/and sweets)
Raisins
Dried apricots
Dried strawberries
Dark chocolate
Yoghurt drops
2 Parts healthy carbohydrates (grains)
Oats
Granola
Popcorn
Corn flakes
Air pop rice
Use this formula for the ultimate trail mix calculation and create your own delicious combinations. If calculating is too much for you right now, I have taken the liberty to do the calculating for you. I have created 3 yummy trail mix recipes, that I hope you will enjoy.

3 Way trail mix like you never had before
1. Sweet and Spicy trail mix
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Serves: 5
Ingredients
100g Mixed seeds
½ t /2.5ml sea salt
1t/5ml paprika
1t/5ml ground cumin
1T/15ml honey or liquid sweetener of choice
1T/15ml soy sauce
3 cups/750ml plain popcorn
½/125ml cup raisins
Method
1. Preheat oven to 200°C. In a medium mixing bowl combine seeds, salt, paprika, cumin, honey and soy sauce. Toss the ingredients until seeds are evenly coated. Pour onto lined baking tray and roast for 5-10 minutes, until seeds are golden brown.
·2.While still warm, not hot, make sure the seed mix doesn’t cool down too much because you still want the seeds to stick to the popcorn. Then add in popcorn and raisins.
3. You can enjoy immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

2. Peanut and chocolate trail mix
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 0 minutes
Serves: 8
Ingredients
½ cup rolled oats
½ cup dried strawberries
½ cup dark chocolate chips or chopped up dark chocolate
½ cup coconut shavings
½ cup peanuts
Method
1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Place oats on a baking tray and bake for 5-8 minutes until oats is golden brown. Make sure you keep an eye on the oats as it quickly burns. Set the oats aside to completely cool.
2. In a large mixing bowl combine all the ingredients. Toss the ingredients together until evenly dispersed, enjoy immediately or store in an airtight jar for up to 1 months.
Why not try…
Replacing strawberries with dried banana and replacing the peanuts with any nuts of choice.

3. Breakfast delight trail mix
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4-6
Ingredients
Mixed seeds roasted 100g
½ cup shredded coconut
½ cup all bran flakes
½ cup dried apricot (Roughly chopped)
400ml plain low fat or fat free or dairy free yogurt
Method
1. In a large mixing bowl combine dry ingredients. Toss the ingredients together until evenly dispersed, sprinkle the trail mix over yoghurt of choice.
