Cannot get over hummus? Don't worry, I have a thick and creamy affordable hummus recipe that is made from five ingredients that might be sitting in your kitchen cupboard or fridge.

Hummus is a traditional Middle Eastern dish that is made from chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, garlic and a generous squeeze of lemon juice. All of these ingredients are blended up to make a delicious creamy dip or spread depending on the consistency of the hummus.

It is not often when you can prepare a delicious recipe so quickly. This dip/spread has numerous nutritious benefits including: chickpeas, which are a good source of plant based protein and fibre. Garlic is high in flavour but has very few calories. Lemon juice is a good source of vitamin C and improves skin quality. Hummus traditionally has a pale cream colour, with a refreshing, tangy and nutty taste. Best served with lamb, fresh veggies or as a spread on toast or bread.

Homemade hummus is worth making, while store bought brands are very good, they are quite expensive for the amount of hummus you get in the container. I really don't know why store bought hummus is so expensive when you can make your own version at home for much cheaper and with a whole lot more flavour.

Hummus is wonderfully versatile. Play around with different vegetables, herbs and spices to create different but tasty new flavours. You can keep a fresh batch of hummus in the fridge for up to seven days. Store in an airtight container or in a jar.

Affordable Hummus

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 0 minutes

Makes: 400ml



1 can chickpeas (drained and rinsed)

2T/30ml plain low fat or non-dairy yoghurt

1 large garlic clove

2T/ 30ml extra virgin olive oil

Juice of ½ a lemon

Salt and pepper to taste



1. Place all ingredients in a food processor, process until smooth and creamy.

2. Make sure to taste the hummus for seasoning before placing in a bowl and chilling in the fridge for at least 30 minutes, for the flavours to mingle.

Avocado hummus

Substitute the olive oil and yoghurt with 1 small avocado.

Herb hummus

To the base recipe add ¼ cup/ 60ml of fresh herb or herbs of choice. The herbs you choose will depend on what you are serving the hummus with.

Spicy hummus

To the base recipe add ½ t/ 2.5ml each of cayenne pepper and smoked paprika and

1 red chilli deseeded.
