Homemade Protein Powder

Protein powder is a great way to add protein and flavour to smoothies, pancakes and baked goodies. Unfortunately it can be very expensive, especially if you use it often.

Most people think DIYing your own protein powder is complicated, well I am here to tell that it is not! I recently ran out of protein powder, I turned the container to the back to read the ingredients. To my surprise most of the ingredients are ingredients that I already have in my kitchen and you might have them too. So, I have created a simple and affordable protein powder that can be made in under five minutes.

Chocolate Protein powder

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 0 minutes

Serves: 9

½ cup/ 125ml yellow pea flour (ground yellow peas)

¼ cup/ 60ml short grain brown rice

¼ cup/ 60ml chia seeds

2T/ 30ml cocoa powder

  • Add all the ingredients into a high speed blender.

  • Blend until a fine powder is formed.

  • Store the protein powder in an airtight container, away from any moisture.

  • A serving amount of the protein powder would be 2T/30ml.

Why not try…

1. Vanilla protein powder

Replace the cocoa powder with vanilla powder.

2. Non-flavoured protein powder

Replace the cocoa powder with a high protein milk powder.

Note! If you are having difficulty finding yellow pea flour, great substitute flours are chick pea/ gram flour (ground chick peas) or oats flour (ground oats).

I personally use short grain brown rice because it is higher in protein but you can definitely use whatever type of brown rice you have.

I know chia seeds can be a bit pricey, you can always substitute the chia seeds with flax seeds, which are more affordable but have less protein.

PS: All weight loss starts in the kitchen
